Some Kind of Church
Matthew 16:13-30, Acts 1:8
We can sometimes hear familiar Scripture passages very differently if we read them aloud and experiment with different points of inflection. This is so with the two passages for this week. We’ll be looking at the passage in Matthew’s gospel that we usually call “Peter’s great confession”, where Peter says to Jesus “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God”, and Jesus replies, “on this rock I will build my church.” We’ll also be looking at Great Commission Jesus issues to his disciples in the first chapter of Acts, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” In each case, with a slight shift in inflection these passages come alive with new challenge, new encouragement, and exciting good news.
