Like Joseph – Matthew 1:18 – 2:23
Only 2 of our gospels include birth narratives: Matthew and Luke. They are very different narratives in many ways, but one of the notable differences is that Luke’s narrative is focused on Mary, with barely a mention of Joseph, while Matthew’s narrative is focused on Joseph. If we step beyond the familiar pageantry of our retelling of the Christmas story, we see a very interesting picture of Joseph, as a man of faith and action, caught in the midst of real-world politics. Again and again, Joseph is visited in dreams and told to take action that will require him to believe in things he cannot prove. And he does take action each time – even action that turns the life of his family upside down. Joseph presents a powerful portrait of what lived faith looks like for all of us.
